Charities & Companies

It’s like in the great stories, the ones that really matter, full of darkness and danger everywhere and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end because how could the end be happy, how could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened? But in the end it’s only a passing thing, a shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come and when the sun shines out it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I know now, that folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t, they kept going because they were holding onto something, that there’s some good in this world, and it’s worth fighting for.

“The charitable sector in Canada owes a debt of gratitude to Susan Fish. Articles on career development, hiring practice, networking and work place diversity and productivity have been vital to my career and the lives of all who I’ve shared these great articles with. Susan is a great researcher, writer and I would highly recommend her for any project you are considering.” – Paul Nazareth, CAGP

“As the Editorial Coordinator at CharityVillage, I’ve worked with Susan since 2010 when she was first hired to provide articles for our website, which is focused on the charitable and nonprofit sector. A talented and professional freelance writer, Susan is enthusiastic and diligent in pursuing story leads we assigned. The content pitches she came up with were creative, timely and completely relevant to our audience–many of her pitched articles have wound up becoming very popular with our readers. Susan’s work always comes in on time and rarely requires much in the way of edits. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Susan.” – Marina Dawson, Charity Village

Much of my work is writing about and for nonprofits, social entrepreneurs and people who are working for what’s good.

Good stories help us make sense of what we’re doing. They give us confidence and hope.

Good stories give others inspiration and motivation. They help donors see that their partnership makes a difference, that they are part of something that matters.

Knowing that we’re often too close to our work to tell its story, I offer a fresh set of ears and eyes, an insatiable curiosity about what makes people tick, and a deep knowledge of how stories work to help tell your story.

You’re part of one of the great stories—and I’d love to tell it.

Writing

Here’s how I work: We have a conversation about the nature of your project and the scope of the work, and decide whether this is a project that is better suited for an hourly rate or a flat rate. We agree upon a rate and what will be involved.

Editing

Some people work with me to edit their writing—whether that be a PhD thesis (I’ve edited four) or a blog post or anything in between. The rate for editing help will be determined based on the nature of the project and the scope of the work needed. We can discuss your needs and determine both what will be involved and what it will cost.

(I haven’t ever found contracts necessary. We trust each other. You pay me when the job is done, unless it’s a long-term project, in which case I bill you monthly.)
